A Guide to Gunshot Detection Technology
September 20th, 2019
With mass shootings on the rise in the United States, the technology used to detect a gunshot through sound and have it transmitted to the police is something that has been steadily growing in popularity. In 2015 alone, there were approximately 300 mass shootings, and in 2018, there were a reported 323 shootings a month before year's end.
What Is Gunshot Technology?
This is not a new idea, it was actually first researched back during World War I. Since then, technology has advanced, and sensors have improved which has made the overall idea become much more of a reality in our modern times.
A lot of our security technology is developed within the military first, and gunshot technology is no exception.
These systems utilize microphone sensor nodes to detect gunshots. The information on the location of the gunshot is then immediately sent to security personnel as well as law enforcement. Some technology can even determine how many shots were fired and what type of weapon it was.
There are several different types of gunshot detection systems including outdoor, indoor, fixed, and mobile. The most popular types out of these are the outdoor and fixed systems. However, we also see a rise in the use of indoor systems. Many cities around the country are on the lookout for mobile solutions as well to fit their needs.
Benefits of Gunshot Detection
These systems are much faster than when 911 calls are made and in many cases are more reliable because some people may be reluctant to even contact the police, to begin with. With this technology being used in Cincinnati, for example, they had the system to cover three square miles and this gunshot detection technology led to the arrest of someone who was in illegal possession of a firearm. They were able to pinpoint his location before he had the chance to escape thanks to this technology.
Schools are also beginning to pick up this technology in an attempt to mitigate the risk for the students and to help ensure a safer and more protected environment. They are staying proactive when it comes to the security of school campuses.
The first school district to be approved for grant funding for this technology was the Kenosha Unified School District in Wisconsin. They received the money to install gunshot detecting system sensors in its 43 schools across the district.
The systems they installed are designed to alert the authorities within seconds of hearing shots fired. It also activates the school's surveillance cameras near that location as well which allows the events to be live-streamed to the authorities.
While these systems are still being worked on, they might not be 100 percent effective, but they are definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to faster response times and increased safety and security.
